Occupational Therapy (OT) Services
Occupational Therapy supports students in developing the skills they need for everyday school activities such as writing, dressing, eating, playing, and transitioning between tasks. OTs help students participate meaningfully and independently in school life.
OT services focus on challenges in:
- Fine motor skills (e.g., writing, cutting, typing)
- Sensory processing (e.g., managing responses to sound, light, textures)
- Activities of daily living (e.g., dressing, toileting, eating)
- Regulation and executive functioning (e.g., focus, transitions, organization)
- Accessing technology (e.g., assistive devices, specialized software)
OT services may include:
- Functional assessments in classroom settings
- Collaborative planning with school teams
- Environmental adaptations and classroom strategies
- Direct intervention with students
- Embedded programming in daily routines
- Staff training on tools, techniques, and student-specific needs
OTs work closely with families, educators, and other professionals to promote student independence and engagement.
Consider a referral when a student:
- Has difficulty with printing, pencil grasp, or using scissors and other classroom tools
- Shows sensory sensitivities to noise, touch, or movement that interfere with learning
- Has delays in self-care tasks like dressing for recess, eating, or toileting
- Struggles with transitioning between classroom tasks or routines
- Has difficulty using or accessing learning technology such as keyboards, tablets, or adapted tools
