
Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Services
Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provide assessment, consultation, and direct support for students with hearing loss from early learning through high school. These services ensure students using hearing aids, cochlear implants, or assistive listening devices have equitable access to instruction and communication.
DHH services include:
- Consultation & Inservicing:
Staff training on audiograms, amplification systems (e.g., FM/DM systems), and classroom strategies - Assessment & Planning:
Evaluation of listening, language, and academic skills; support for IPP goal setting and transitions - Classroom Support & Equipment:
Guidance on adapting instruction and troubleshooting amplification systems - Targeted Interventions:
Programming for vocabulary, comprehension, social skills, and self-advocacy - Family & Community Engagement:
Collaboration with families, audiologists, and coordination of annual DHH Skillshops
PCS is committed to fostering inclusive learning environments for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
Consider a referral when a student:
- Has a diagnosed hearing loss (mild to profound), including those using hearing aids or cochlear implants
- Struggles to hear or follow instructions in classroom settings, even with supports
- Shows delays in language, communication, or auditory processing
- Frequently asks for repetition or appears disengaged during verbal instruction
- Requires support with personal hearing equipment (e.g., FM/DM systems)
- Needs strategies to improve listening skills, self-advocacy, or social communication
- Recently experienced a change in hearing or received a new diagnosis
