Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs) support students from early learning through high school who have a diagnosed visual impairment, including low vision, progressive eye conditions, or cortical visual impairment. TVIs collaborate with schools, families, and community partners to ensure equitable access to learning.
TVI services include:
Conducting Functional Vision Assessments and Learning Media Assessments
Providing direct instruction in areas such as Braille, assistive technology, and the Expanded Core Curriculum
Supporting educational assistants and school staff with training and vision-specific strategies
Assisting with accessible formatting of assessments
Contributing to the development and reporting of Individualized Program Plans (IPPs)
Recommending specialized equipment, tools, and technology
Delivering professional learning on vision-related topics
Facilitating bi-annual low vision clinics in partnership with regional consultants
Promoting awareness of vision loss and inclusive practices
TVIs also provide support for students with medical vision diagnoses and offer screening when vision concerns arise.
Consider a referral when a student:
Has a diagnosed vision impairment (low vision, blindness, or progressive condition)
Is struggling to access printed materials or visual content in class
Squints, tilts head, or sits very close to screens/books
Has difficulty navigating the classroom, hallways, or playground safely
May benefit from instruction in Braille, screen readers, or assistive technology
