Preparing for School and Winter Weather

Cold temperatures and winter conditions have returned to our region. As per Grande Prairie Public School's administrative procedure, schools remain open during regular school hours, despite winter weather. School buses will not operate if the temperature in the City of Grande Prairie at 6:00 a.m. is -40°C or colder (-48°C with wind chill).

Here are some practical tips and guidelines for families as they help their children navigate winter weather while at school.

Elementary and Junior High Students:

At these grades, recess remains an important part of the school day, providing a break for up to 30 minutes. For this reason, children need to come to school prepared to spend time outside in winter weather.

Recess is cancelled only if there are extreme weather conditions (temperatures below -25°C, including in the wind chill).

High School Students:

Many students in this age group walk to and from school. Parents and guardians could check in with their children to ensure they leave home equipped to protect exposed skin from winter weather.

Students may be expected to go outside for outdoor or physical education classes. These classes will continue unless there are extreme weather conditions.

School Buses:

If your child is riding the school bus, warm clothing is important to keep them safe during winter weather.

Families can use the FirstView App to track their bus and stay informed about unexpected delays or cancellations. The App is provided by First Student Canada, the contractor operating school buses on behalf of GPPSD. Download the App: https://www.firstviewapp.com
