Preschool Program at Swanavon School

The Swanavon preschool program provides a specialized early learning program to assist children between 2 ½ - 5 years of age in their development. The program is staffed with one teacher and a varied number of educational assistants depending on the needs of the children. Children may also receive support from physical therapists, psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, vision/hearing educational consultants, and occupational therapists.

Children’s needs are assessed and individual program plans are developed. The program is family focused, and all the families are involved in the development of their child’s Individual Program Plan (IPP).

These program plans are implemented in a play-based environment that encourages self-esteem and develops each child’s full potential.  Children engage in ACTVITIES that:

    • encourage sorting, classifying, and sequencing - pre-reading and pre-math skills
    • have puzzles and patterning- the stepping stones to reading
    • encourage role-playing and imagination - playing with cars, dress-up, & puppets
    • are non-competitive games
    • encourage reading

The preschool program provides an opportunity for children to develop and refine age appropriate skills in an educational classroom. It provides a language focused, center-based learning environment introducing pre-kindergarten concepts and skills. Children participate in structured peer interactions and staff initiated questioning to promote social interactions and language practice. The classroom is organized into learning centers that provide a great variety of learning experiences for the students.

The goal of the program is to provide constructive learning through play to encourage the development of the child’s physical and intellectual abilities ( including language skills), to contribute to the development of positive self-esteem, and to encourage the desire to learn and be independent. The preschool program also aims to help the child define and cultivate social, emotional, and creative needs. These goals are fostered by providing the child with:

·         Stimulating materials and activities arranged in such centers as arts and crafts, blocks, house center, sensory tables, construction, table toys (puzzles, games, pre-reading activities/phonemic awareness), books, music and movement, and science

·         Structured center time to focus on the child’s individual language needs

·         Time to select activities that reflect the child’s individual needs, interests, and developmental level

During the pre-kindergarten years, children’s experience with communication and literacy begin to form the basis for their later school success. Given adequate opportunities to interact with responsive adults and peers in language and print-rich environments, young children develop vocabulary, extended language skills, and knowledge about the world around them. Games and activities with items to sort, classify, compare, contrast, and match will help with pre-reading and pre-math concepts.

The preschool years can never be recaptured. This is the time when so much is discovered and absorbed. Every day there is something new to wonder and think about, observe and create. It is an exciting and joyful time. Playing is essential to a child’s learning through activities such as painting, singing, role playing, story telling, and outdoor play time. It is our goal at Swanavon to create a program to assist your child to develop to their fullest potential.
