Music Programs at Swanavon School

At Swanavon School, students begin formal music instruction at the primary level in Grade 1.   Swanavon School offers a general music program (Classroom Music) to students in Grades 1 through 6 taught by Elementary Music specialist, Laura Storey.

The Elementary (General) Music curriculum is organized into:

  • Concepts (Melody, Rhythm, Harmony, Form, Expression)
  • Skills (Singing, Playing Instruments, Listening, Moving, Reading & Writing, Creating)
  • Attitudes. Positive attitudes towards music are fostered by success in learning music skills.

Students are provided with a variety of learning experiences to develop their confidence and ability as musicians.

At Swanavon we also offer an extra-curricular choir, The Swanavon Singers, for interested students in Grades 4 through 6.  The choir season runs from September to May. The choir participates in a variety of events throughout the year: assemblies, concerts, music festival, GPPSD Elementary Spring Sing and more.  In 2009, the Swanavon Singers were the top Grade 4-6 Choir at the GP Music Festival.

INSTRUMENTAL PROGRAMS: The Grande Prairie Public School District also offers two streams of instrumental programs to Swanavon students.  The GPPSD String program begins for interested students in Grade 4.  The GPPSD Band program begins for interested students in Grade 5.  Both programs continue on up to Grade 12.
