Welcome to the 2016-2017 School Year!
September 1st brings a lot of excitement as we open our doors to students for our first year at Riverstone. Staff have been working hard throughout the summer to prepare the building for our community. We are very proud of the facility and the group of educators and support staff we have assembled for the upcoming year.
Being a new school, we all have a part in creating an outstanding community, and as a staff we look forward to embarking on this together with you. Taking the time to get to know one another is important to building solid relationships.
As Principal of Riverstone, I would like to share my background with you. I was born and raised in Grande Prairie and have been with the Grande Prairie Public School District for many years, first as a student and then as a teacher beginning in 2002. Having taught grades 7 through 11, I have appreciated the energy students bring to the school. For the last five years, I have been in administration and have had the wonderful opportunity to engage with students in grades K through 8: three years at Aspen Grove School and most recently two years at Alexander Forbes the Academy.
In the education world, I received my B.Ed. through the University of Alberta. Further to that I completed my Masters in Education with a focus on Teacher Leadership in 2010 through Walden University.
With a strong connection to Grande Prairie, I greatly appreciate the importance of ensuring that school is a safe and energizing place to be. We have a wonderfully committed team of professionals who daily model their own commitment to learning and exploring with your children. I welcome each student and their family to our school, for after all, it is this partnership of family and school working together that makes our community fabulous.
As a staff, we will be working closely together to ensure that we are providing multiple levels of supports to students based on their needs to expand learning opportunities and continue excellent instruction in literacy and numeracy.
Please be sure to consider attending our School Council meetings or volunteering for the many wonderful events that they support. Please also consider liking and following the Riverstone Playground Society to stay up to date on the fundraising progress of this very important group to our community.
If you're new to the community and are looking for a school- come talk to me or to my administrative partners, Ms. Kristina Black and Mr. Jason Wall.
We look forward to becoming a part of your community as we become a part of yours.
Miss. Jill Burgess
