Grande Prairie, AB, December 15, 2021 – On November 1, 2021, United Way Alberta Northwest launched their Period Promise Campaign to help end 'period poverty,' which is when an individual cannot afford period products. Period poverty impacts girls and women in the community and our schools.
We are proud to announce our Division has joined with United Way Alberta Northwest to bring three schools two barrier-free dispensers and commercial grade products each: Grande Prairie Composite High School, Charles Spencer High School and Crystal Park School. The dispensers and products were provided by a generous donation made by the Swan City Rotary Club of Grande Prairie and an anonymous donor. Thank you for your support, we are grateful!
This project allows our Division to further support our students by removing barriers that can lead to greater student participation in school and their communities. It is a further commitment to ensuring 'Every Student Succeeds.'
“Period Products are very much a basic need for a lot of our student population. However, they aren’t the most accessible. Period products can be pricey, and having to ask for a pad or tampon from a staff member or teacher can put students in an uncomfortable position. By having these machines in washrooms, we are helping open up the accessibility of period products to students and other members of our school," explains Mia Gilje, a grade 10 student at Charles Spencer High School and a member of the school's Maverik Movement Club.
Students and parents will be notified of the dispener installments and the program through various internal school communication.
