The GPPSD Nutrition program enables the Division to provide a daily nutritious meal that follows the Alberta Nutrition Guidelines for Children and Youth (ANGCY). The program was originally designed to provide students in K-6 with a nutritious meal and, in the long term, to build student capacity for lifelong healthy eating. Since then, the program has been expanded to include junior high students. The program is designed to ensure that all students have access to food and that anyone, including students, parents, and schools, can identify a need for support from the program and receive it. Last year, GPPSD provided anywhere from 250-320 lunches a week to students.
The donation from the Grande Prairie Firefighters Charitable Foundation will allow the Nutrition program to support High School Students who are in need of a daily nutritious meal. "The Grande Prairie Public School Division is grateful for partners in our community such as the Grande Praire Firefighters Charitable Foundation. Their donation makes a difference for students.", said Angela DesBarres, Director of Teaching and Learning, GPPSD.
