The Grande Prairie Composite High School’s Phoenix is set to rise for the 22/23 school year

June 21, 2022

Grande Prairie, AB, June 21, 2022 -  Announcing the opening of the new Grande Prairie Composite High School (GPCHS) facility for the 2022/2023 School Year. The new school is the single largest high school north of Edmonton and will be opening its doors to over 1,200 Grade 9-12 students.

"We are proud to unveil our new school to our students, families, and the City of Grande Prairie. It has been a long time coming, and I am excited about this historic event for our students and the greater school community," says Dennis Vobeyda, Principal, Grande Prairie Composite High School.

The school offers spacious shops for senior trades, a theatre, state-of-the-art technology with touch screen interactive displays in each classroom, an oversized gymnasium, and many features that enhance student accessibility, such as Braille on classroom signage, which adds to the inclusive feel of the school.

Overall, there is an abundance of natural lighting, and the school is equipped with solar panels to generate partial energy for energy needs. The addition of the panels has given the school a Leed Silver certification.

The school's location and building are changing, but our commitment to student excellence and success remains. "We will continue to offer our Athletic Academy programming, and we proudly remain the only High School north of Edmonton to provide the International Baccalaureate Programme," explains Mr. Vobeyda.

The New Phoenix Logo

The logo features a phoenix rising from the name of the school. The phoenix is moving upwards to represent looking towards the future and rising to the occasion. The two spanned wings on either side of the phoenix represent strength and speed as they pull the phoenix up from behind the lettering.

The phoenix symbolizes rebirth, the school's renewal, in a brand-new building. "Our students can now proudly call themselves GPCHS Phoenixes.  My sincere thanks to the school community for their input into selecting our new name, and to nine10 for the design. Our school division's mission is to be a place where every student succeeds, and with this new school, our Phoenixes have a bright future," says Vobeyda.
