There is a broad range of research that proves that having access to music learning opportunities taught by music specialists has a positive impact on overall student learning in school. As a result of this research and the Board's belief in providing a range of opportunities for our students, we have a supported model of district music delivery from Grades 6-12 in all GPPSD and from Grade 5 in larger schools. Music programing depends upon enrollment.

The excellence of the GPPSD music program has been recognized at the local, provincial and national level. Elementary students have the opportunity to participate in district music beginning in Grade 5 or 6, where they have the opportunity to learn string instruments, band instruments or choral music.

At the secondary level students can continue performing in bands, orchestra or choirs and can also begin studying guitar.

The Grande Prairie Public School District recognizes the importance of music education as a part of an innovative academic experience for all students.  In the 2014-2015 school year, GPPSD added support for a district guitar program to provide further/expanded opportunities for students to explore music in the secondary grades. The band, string, choral music and guitar programs are taught by qualified teachers who specialize in their area of instruction.  The repertoire is diverse, ranging from traditional selections, to jazz and the most current trends in music performance at all grade levels.  Throughout each school year, students prepare themselves to share in their achievements on stage both within and outside of their school communities.   Our band and orchestra students participated in pit bands in the Charles Spencer High School production of Cinderella during the 2015-16 school year.
