Derek Taylor Public School Counselling Services

DTPS TEACHER-COUNSELLOR

Our counsellor works with teachers to identify and address personal/social needs of students in an effort to assist the students in achieving their personal best.

The counsellor meets with students individually and with groups of students who request her assistance.  Parents of students are also welcome to refer students to see her.

Referrals are often made to outside agencies and professionals who are specifically trained.

SCHOOL COMMUNITY TEAM

The Derek Taylor School Community team includes both staff from the school and professionals from outside agencies (Mental Health, Public Health, and Child and Family Services). The goal of the team is to work with families and students to positively impact the success of a student at Derek Taylor Public School.  The team also acts as a link with outside agencies and provides resources to create a network of support.  The School Community team meets once per month at the school.

Students typically do not attend Team meetings.  The goal of the team is not to provide direct one-on-one support for students but rather to assist them and/or their families by meeting with parents to,

  • Brainstorm strategies that may be used to assist in problem solving.
  • Provide consultation and support to teachers to help address student needs.
  • Provide resource materials to parents and families.
  • Provide information and referrals to community agencies.

Coordination of the school community team meetings is arranged by Mrs. Martel, the school counsellor. Please contact Mrs. Martel or an administrator at the school by telephoning 357-9174.

Please be aware that participating families may request for any team member not to participate in their meeting at any time prior to the meeting.
