 Speech-Language Department Service Protocol

The Speech-Language Department offers a number of rehabilitation services.   To access these services children can be referred in a variety of ways.   Please refer to the G.P.A.T. introduction for specific information regarding this process.

Once a referral has been made to the Speech-Language Department, children are generally seen in their home schools for an assessment.  Following the assessment, parents receive a report and a copy is sent to the teacher.  The report will detail the results of the assessment and outline a course of action.  If there are questions about the report, parents/teachers are asked to contact the consultant involved.

If the recommendation is for consultation, the consultant will discuss the child’s needs with his/her teacher and develop a plan of action.  This consultation may result in goals to be included in the child’s individual program plan.  If program goals are provided for implementation by school staff, that program will be monitored by the consultant.

If the recommendation is for direct therapy, the consultant will arrange for the child to be seen directly at an agreed upon time (agreeable with teachers/parents).  Specific goals will be worked on in the therapy sessions. Please feel free to ask the consultant/therapist for a copy of the child’s goals.

Some children may be placed on a furlough or a period of inactivity following the assessment or treatment.  These children will be scheduled for review at a later date to analyze progress or development.

All reports are sent to parents, the students’ school (teacher, principal) and a copy is retained in the main file at Crystal Park School.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Speech Language Department at (780) 539-0333.
